Weekend Editions: Smile Brilliant Review

White teeth is something that we all want to have. But we often don’t help ourselves out when we drink pop (guilty), wine (guilty), and coffee. So our next step is to find a whitening system. Of course, there are a ridiculous amount of choices from strips, trays, toothpastes, or your dentist. I’ve tried quite a few options and today I’ll review one of my favorites, Smile Brilliant.

Smile Brilliant teeth whitening system uses trays made for you. There is a bit of a process to get the trays created, but once done, you are set for personalized teeth whitening.

When you purchase the Smilie Brilliant system, you recieve a large kit. Indside you will find; two pastes to create the molds of your teeth, the trays to create the molds, the whitening gel and desensitizing gel. As I said before, the great thing about this system is the trays are made for you. To create the trays, you need to create impressions of your top and bottom teeth.

You will want to set aside around 15 to 30 minutes to create your impressions. Be sure to follow the instructions! It takes a bit of patience to get the molds right, but in the end it will be worth it.

After you have created your impressions, all you need to do now is drop them in the mail and wait for your trays. It will take around 2 weeks (with ship time both ways) before you get your trays. Your trays will be a perfect fit for your teeth and make whitening easier.

Once your ready to do your first whitening, be sure to read all the instructions. If you have any issues with teeth sensitivity, I would reccomend only doing a 15 minute session. You can always work up to longer ones. All together, your first session will take around 30 minutes. That includes prep time (brushing, flossing, putting the trays in), actual whiting session, and the desensitizing session. Is is very important to use the desensitizing gel after whitening to help replace minerals on your teeth.

Now let me tell you about my experience. When I first tried to make my impressions, I thought it was going to make my gag reflex kick in. I am unlucky enough to have big teeth in a very narrow mouth. I’ve had dentists look in my mouth before filling a cavitiy and say, “well, this should be fun.” And not fun in a good way. So it was tough for me to keep the molds in for the prescribed time becuase it filled my mouth so much, but I persevered. I looked at my impressions, and thought they would be good enough so I sent them off.

After I got my personalized trays back, I was excited to do my first session. Let us just say it wasn’t the most plesant expereince. My bottom tray felt like it was popping off my teeth. And the top tray felt like it was overtaking my mouth. After explaining my experience to my contact at Smile Brilliant, we decided I didn’t get good enough impressions. I also explained my small mouth. While Smile Brilliant currently just has one size for the trays that hold impressions, they are currently testing a smaller size for people like me. I was lucky enough to get to try the smaller size version and it made a world of difference. When I went to make the impressions with the smaller size, I was able to hold down the mold to get a better impression. One tip for making impressions: use your fingers and hold down the front and the backs of the tray. This will ensure that the mold actaully gets your whole tooth rather than sliding up and just registering the top. I think that is what happened in my first set of impressions, not enough of my tooth got molded. Back to my impressions; my second set was much better – it even looked like the “ideal” mold in the instructions. I dropped them in the mail and waited for my new trays.

My new trays arrived and the whitening process was much better with well-fitting trays. The process is relatively easy. I like to do my whitening when I stretches for my back. This means I’m relatively still and laying on my back. By doing it this way, I don’t get that dreaded awkward drool that happens sometimes when you have whitening trays/strips in your mouth. You know what I mean? While they say you can easily talk and even go to the grocery store with the trays in, I don’t think I would do that. I can sort of talk with mine in, but not well enough to interact with anyone other than my husband.

The most important part? The Smile Brilliant system works. While my summer has been crazy busy and I haven’t gotten a chance to whiten my teeth as much as I like, I have been able to see a difference. I can’t wait until I’m able to do it regularly to really get my teeth to that pearly white sheen.

Tell me, how do you whiten your teeth?

I received a Smile Brilliant teeth whitening kit in exchange for a review. All options are my own.
