Welcome back to Reading Lately! Cat and I are excited for you to join us again. Reading Lately is a great way to come together and share our recent reads. We will be back the last Friday of every month. Be sure to go visit a few other bookworms in the linkup below. I know I can’t wait to add to my to-read list.
Recent Reads
The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco: This was an interesting book told in a non-chronilogical order. It has fantastic world building with magic. There is a young woman where we see how she has turned out (at the ripe age of 17 or so) and the young and eager girl growing into her magic. Pick this up if you enjoy magic, world building, and trying to figure things out.

A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica Cluess: A story set in Victorian England with magic and a war against demon-like beings called Ancients. Henrietta is prophesied as the woman sorcerer that will save them all. But she realizes she isn’t but needs to continue to play the part to save her life and her friends. All kinds of difficult decisions have to be made by the characters, with a lot of grey area. Slightly awkward love-triangle, but the storyline carries it.

The Wolf Road by Beth Lewis: A dark book set in the near future after what was likely a nuclear war, we follow a girl on her journey to find her birth parents after finding out that the man that has raised her since she was 7 is wanted for murder. Elka’s struggles are fascinating to follow, along with her grit to survive. She eventually has to confront her “daddy” in a very satisfying ending.

The Alloy of Law by Brandon Sanderson: I heart all things Brandon Sanderson. This book is an extension of Sanderson’s original Mistborn trilogy. This has a wild west feel with the fancy city that the main character is pulled back to. There are amazing characters, a great plot, and just an all around fantastic story. If your looking for an amazing fantasy series, check out The Final Empire (the first book in this world).

Shadows of Self by Brandon Sanderson: This is the sequel to The Alloy of Law (above), so pretty much just going to say ditto to that. This one was even better as it also explores religion and what a god “should” do.

Oh wow, those all sound good! The Wolf Road sounds really intense and I like the cover!
It is pretty intense, but very good!
I enjoyed reading your reviews! The book involving Victorian England and fantasy sounds like a neat combination. Thanks for the info, too, on the online book group – I will check it out!
Thank you! Hope you can join the book group!
i lacked on reading last year and want to change up what I need to read this year, so I’m checking these out!
Hope you find something to enjoy!
I am liking the looks of Bone Witch – judging the book not only by its attractive cover but by your synopsis and review. Will add it to Goodreads.
I totally judge books by the cover.
I will have to look into that Final Empire series – I love fantasy books!
It is one of my favorites!
I’ve had my eye on The Bone Witch. I’ll have to look into it. 🙂
It is quite good. Not a ton of action, but certainly makes you think.
I have The Bone Witch on my “to read” list and am glad to see that you gave it a higher rating! Now, if only I could find it at my local library ha ha.
So many good books! I’ve been searching for Brandon Sanderson’s mist born trilogy books. They are really hard to find around here. I’d like to check out the first one to make sure it’s an investment i want to make.
I hope you are able to find it!
