This month included 2 amazing books, 1 audiobook finished (finally!) and then two more novellas that were, well fine.

What I’ve been reading lately
Legion: The Many Lives of Stephen Leeds by Brandon Sanderson: Hey, I finally finished another audiobook. I’ve only been listening to this on and off for months now. I’ve never read any of these Sanderson books. Stephen is a genius, but to handle all the information he has, he has created aspects (imaginary people) that are experts in different things – like psychology or cryptography. He then solves cases (along with his aspects) for people, often for a hefty fee. This is actually 3 novellas pulled together into 1 book. I enjoyed this book, even though it took me forever to read. It was fun to follow along Stephen as he constructs the world around him, even when it slowly falls apart.

The Border Keeper by Kerstin Hall: This was an interesting book. Very lyrical and descriptive but sometimes it was difficult to follow the plot. I’m not even sure how to describe it. But it is more of an experience than anything.

Second Spear by Kerstin Hall: I was expecting a similar book to The Border Keeper, but this wasn’t it. I actually found this one to be easier to follow because you could kind of see where the plot was going and it wasn’t quite as lyrical and flowy. This follows Second Spear Tyn as she is swept up in machinations of gods, goddesses and demons. Still enjoyable, just different from book 1.

The Art of Prophecy by Wesley Chu: This book is fantastic. Easily one of my favorites this year. Two nations are at war with another, both with prophecies and close held secrets when it comes to magic. In one, the prophesied hero has been born and is raised in luxury with the best trainers. But then, the Eternal Khan is killed by someone other than the hero. The hero becomes a political liability and we follow him and the others that help him escape. But then we also meet one of the Khan’s closest warriors and what is happening within that nation. The throw in a slightly crazy shadow assassin. So many good characters, a great plot, and secrets within secrets. I highly recommend picking this one up.

The Oleander Sword by Tasha Suri: Wow, what a book. Malini is fighting for her throne. Priya is attempting to put her country back together again. But both are drawn together again even though they know they shouldn’t. But there is a larger threat on the horizon and both are in the middle of it, but on opposite sides. This is a fantastic book with morally grey characters, interesting magic and a plot that keeps you guessing. I cannot wait until the next book comes out.
